NIO is making some changes to its base battery option for the upcoming 2024 model year cars. Instead of the previous 75 kWh dual chemistry battery (LFP/NCM), they decided to use the standard battery and will now feature a new 75 kWh battery with only LFP cells. This update reduces the production processes and cuts costs. LFP battery cells are recognized for being one of the most economical options per kWh.

NIO Already Being Changes on Their Batteries
Do you know, Initially, NIO was offering a 70 kWh battery which was completely based on the nickel manganese cobalt (NCM); there was also a 100 kWh, NCM battery available. However, by the end of 2021, they decided to do some changes on the battery, and as a result, they replaced the 70 kWh NCM battery with 75 kWh hybrid pack (LFP/NCM). This new technology implements a “cell to pack” (CTP) design, helping eliminate with no battery modules. These changes boosted energy density and overall power.

What is LFP Battery?
LFP stands for “Lithium Iron Phosphate” cells, having a lower energy density than NCM. However, they offer the same capacity power in kWh, but they pretend to be larger and heavier. This advanced technology of batteries will boost the battery industry while maintaining the capacity of 75 kWh, and one of the more advantages of this technology will help to reduce the complexity and cost of batteries.
Recently, NIO tweeted in his official X account, and informed them that they signed the framework agreement in Beijing. Also said, we will jointly accelerate the development and adoption of long life battery technologies based on NIC battery swap. The aim of this agreement is to deliver better battery swap services to EV users and facilitate sustainable development.
Why did this Agreement Happen?
Nowadays, most automotive companies focus on producing and developing the Electric vehicle, but they are not focusing on reducing the price of the vehicle. But, it can be possible only after reducing the price of EV batteries. Especially in China, where the electric vehicle price war is quite high, and that is why this agreement happened in Beijing.
With this new battery technology, they can bring some improvements and performance. NIO’s new battery algorithms will reduce the price and improve the performance. Not only performance, even this technology will improve DC fast charging from 140 kW to 170 kW. After the NIO battery, the charging time will be shorter from 10 to 80% (27 minutes instead of 30 minutes).

Advantage of LFP
The LFP battery not only reduces the costs but it also has a very good life cycle and higher safety than NCM. On the other hand, a lower power density and issues related to cold weather performance (charging) is the basic problem with EV batteries, but these problems can be tackled using LFP.
The NIO has a 150 kWh solid state battery option but they require extra runtime. But, this new package has the same size and similar weight as the 100 kWh battery. All three battery types are compatible with NIO battery charging stations.
